New Program To Detect Liars Through Handwriting

December 14, 2009 | News

For a long time now, studies and experiments have been performed on understanding the handwriting of people which further can be used in the detection of lies or any other criminal offences. And finally, a computer program has been designed which will act as a great help for the forensic experts by reading the handwriting of the suspects or the subjects.

For years now, handwriting experts have been working in the forensic labs, trying to read through the handwriting of subjects and thus predict the unknown. Handwriting of a person is extremely important as it expresses a lot of things about the subject’s nature and behavior. And hence, the research that has been under process for several years has now finally been put into practice and followed rightly.

A group of researchers have developed a complete computerized tool with special features that will help in understanding and measuring the characteristics of a subject’s handwriting. The main purpose of using this technology is to use it as a lie detector.

Gil Luria and Sara Rosenblum, the heads in the research developed a computer program that will measure the various factors like,

  • Time duration for which the pen was on paper against the duration for which the pen was in air.
  • The height, length and the width of every character written by the subject.
  • The pressure used to write the content.

The research work performed on this topic thus revealed that these factors play a great role in knowing if the person or the subject was lying or stands true. The accuracy of the system is believed to replace the famous lie detector test and may become a regular detection test. However, you can always make use of the polygraph tests along with this handwriting tool to detect the truth. The research is also believed to be included as an interesting topic in the new issue of Applied Cognitive Psychology.
